Florence International Airport (IATA code: FLR) is located a few kilometres from the city centre, in a very convenient position with respect to the city’s arterial roads. Arriving in Florence by plane shortens travel time, and thanks to the recent expansion of the terminal, there are now many airlines flying there and many destinations served, by both major and low-cost airlines.
Also called Florence Peretola Airport, named after the suburb in which it is located, Florence Airport is officially named after Amerigo Vespucci. In 2019, it recorded an absolute record of transit passengers, a good 3 million; however, this number is not enough to make it the first airport in Tuscany, a position occupied by Pisa International Airport.
Once you land in Florence, you can head straight for the city centre, or leave for a tour of Tuscany. There are many options available: car, taxi, tramway or bus.
To get to the centre of Florence once you get off the plane, by far the cheapest and most comfortable way is by tramway. The airport is in fact the terminus of the T2 line, which runs to the Santa Maria Novella station, practically in the city centre. Tickets can be purchased directly from the automatic machines at the stop, and the journey takes about 30 minutes. The ticket price is that of a standard single journey, currently set at EUR 1.50.
During the journey, tram line T2 stops at a number of strategic points in the city, including Viale Guidoni, Via di Novoli, Viale Redi, Viale Belfiore and Via Alamanni. At the Santa Maria Novella station, it is possible to change lines, boarding the T1 line in a northerly direction (Careggi hospital) or southerly direction (to Scandicci).
Once an hour, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, the Volainbus bus departs from the Florence airport, arriving directly at the Santa Maria Novella station without intermediate stops. It can be a convenient solution to save some time, and travel with some extra comfort, as on board you can take advantage of the free wi-fi connection and ample space for your luggage. Keep in mind, however, that the cost of the ticket is much higher than on the tramway.
Finally, the most convenient way to get from the airport to the hotel is by taxi. You will find them waiting for you outside the terminal, and they will be ready to take you wherever you want. Taxis in Florence are very expensive: for the airport-centre journey, the basic fare is €24.70, plus any supplements for luggage or rides during night hours or on public holidays. The duration of the airport-centre journey by taxi is about 15 minutes, mainly due to the fact that taxis are allowed to pass through the reserved lanes and within the car-free zone.
From Florence airport it is possible to reach many other locations in Tuscany. For a start, if you have a rental car, from Florence airport you can take the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway directly, which after a few kilometres intersects with the A1 Milano-Napoli motorway. Moving southwards from the terminal exit, you instead take the viaduct of the Indiano, which allows you to reach the Florence-Pisa-Livorno highway.
Immediately outside the airport area is the Cap Autolinee stop, where the regional bus to Prato stops, with intermediate stops at Questura – Ferraris – Soccorso – S. Marco. The journey time from Florence to Prato is approximately 30 minutes. To reach the rest of Tuscany, it is convenient to arrive at Santa Maria Novella station first, and continue the journey by train or bus to the destination of interest.
